In allowing the discontinuation of the ordination candidacy of Mary Ann Kaiser, a self-avowed and practicing lesbian ministerial candidate in the Southwest Texas Annual Conference, Bishop Jim Dorff affirmed that only the General Conference can set or change the qualifications for candidacy and ordained ministry. Furthermore, he called on all involved to “administer the requirements of the General Conference” and to “hold each other mutually accountable through the processes outlined in the Book of Discipline.”

The United Methodist Reporter has commentary on the decision from Jarrell Wilson, student at Austin Presbyterian Seminary, and Thomas A. Lambrecht, vice president of Good News.

The following is the United Methodist News Service’s story filed by Heather Hahn on Mary Ann Kaiser.
